Transparency KTMB, Raise the River/The River Inn in 2023.
We are addressing ongoing misconceptions about the Reno River Inn’s involvement with Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful (KTMB). Some still believe we wronged KTMB, which we aim to clarify.
We’ve posted emails and texts on here from KTMB’s initial invitation to sponsor to their later exclusion, influenced by concerns from KTMB’s major sponsors. These sponsors allegedly threatened to withdraw funding if we were included. KTMB’s public explanation, however, cites past code violations, which had been cleared before KTMB reached out.
Despite this, in our opinion we were unfairly excluded after significant effort and costs preparing for the event. KTMB’s decision was influenced by external pressure, not factual issues. We remain committed to supporting the community and aim to correct the misinformation surrounding our involvement. This is about transparency and the truth—KTMB invited us, then removed us due to sponsor pressure.
We are still added to this page as of 2/7/2024 so more to come

Our Experience with KTMB’s Raise the River Event (2023)
In June 2023, Dana Miller, owner of Reno's Historic River Inn, was contacted by the Fundraising and Event Manager of Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful (KTMB) through TikTok. They reached out to us to participate in their “Raise the River” event. After considering the opportunity, we agreed to sponsor the event, paying a $3,000 sponsorship fee. Our excitement for the event grew, and we immediately began preparations.
Our Commitment to the Event:
We posted the event on our website.
We made several TikTok videos expressing our excitement.
We shared the event on multiple Facebook pages, including TeamSOS, SmartInnCloud, and River Inn.
We designed logos and spent over $1,000 on promotional swag to distribute at the event.
The Unexpected Cancellation:
On July 19, 2023, just weeks before the event, we were informed by KTMB’s Executive Director, Darcy, that our sponsorship was being canceled. We were blindsided and deeply disappointed. We had already invested significant time, money, and effort into the event. During a phone call, the director revealed that large donors had expressed concerns about our involvement, threatening to pull funding if we remained a sponsor.
We were told that KTMB’s partners had raised issues about the River Inn, but we were never provided specific details about these concerns.
Communication Breakdown:
· June 13th 2023 I was contacted by the Fundraising and Event Manager to sponsor Raise the River event put on by KTMB
July 19, 2023 – Initial Email: KTMB informed us that several local partners had raised concerns about the River Inn, which led to the board's decision to cancel our sponsorship.
Our Response: We expressed our desire to meet with KTMB and their concerned members to discuss the issues and clarify any misunderstandings. We also pointed out that we had already made public announcements and invested in preparing for the event.
Follow-up Email (July 20, 2023): We reiterated our willingness to meet and offered to participate without any mention of the River Inn if necessary.
Phone Call with KTMB I offered to sit down with everyone to address any concerns directly. I also informed her that we worked with the city and the citations and stop-work orders issued against us were all cleared—without fees or penalties. I explained that the negative claims circulating were just rumors, not facts. I offered to drop the River Inn as sponsorship and only use our business. She told me she would speak with her team and follow up. However, as seen in the last email from KTMB I received, nothing changed.
Public Backlash:
We were devastated by the situation. We had worked hard to support KTMB and promote the event, only to be canceled without a fair opportunity to address the issues. In response, we expressed our disappointment on social media, which led to a wave of support from our followers. This caused significant backlash, and KTMB’s Facebook page was eventually shut down due to overwhelming comments in support of the RIver Inn
Aftermath and Continued Struggles:
KTMB later explained that their values did not align with the River Inn, but in our view, this stemmed from false rumors spread by local neighbors. These rumors, such as accusations of dumping sewage into the river, have plagued the River Inn’s reputation in Reno.
Since this incident, in our opinion our reputation has been unfairly damaged, and we continue to face challenges with KTMB. We were deeply hurt by the treatment we received, especially given that we were sought out by KTMB in the first place. The Executive Director, who was hired after our sponsorship was confirmed, not only terminated our involvement but also fired the person who initially brought us on board.
We still have the promotional swag we purchased for the event, which remains unused. The community now views us negatively due to how the situation was presented, despite our belief that we were the victims in this scenario.
Our Stand:
To this day, in our opinion we believe that we were unfairly targeted based on hearsay and rumors. We were willing to meet, discuss, and clear up any misconceptions, but KTMB never provided us that opportunity. This experience has left us feeling disrespected and disappointed in the way KTMB handled the situation.
We continue to support our community and remain committed to promoting responsible stewardship of the Truckee River. Despite the setbacks, we will not let this injustice define us.
